Driving In Tenerife
Car Insurance
Car insurance is generally cheaper than the UK, but shop around anyway. There are British insurance brokers and some companies do have English speaking call centres. Make sure you understand your policy. In most cases it is the car that is insured and not the driver. Your insurance documents should also contain an accident form. There are very few Insurance Companies that allow you to pay monthly. Payment is normally in full or in two halves. When it is due for renewal they will take it from your bank account and you may not receive a new policy, but they will send you a receipt, so you need to keep this with the original policy documents in the car as proof of payment.
General Info
Petrol is much cheaper in Tenerife and some petrol stations still have pump attendants. The usual services are available such as car wash, air pumps which are free of charge and vacuum cleaners. There are plenty of petrol stations in and around the towns and along the motorways.
The drink / drive limit is much lower than the UK. If you get breathalysed and found to be over the limit you could get a hefty 600€ fine. If you pay within 30 days you may get a 30% discount.
Speed cameras and speed humps have found their way to Tenerife! Speed cameras have been positioned on the motorway, so take care and stick to the speed limits. It probably won’t be long before they are placed on other roads.
Some speed humps look like zebra crossings and are in fact designated crossing points, so take care, pedestrians naturally expect you to stop for them.
