About Living In Tenerife

Many people seem to think that moving abroad is going to solve all their problems and they can ‘live happily ever after’. Let’s be realistic about this, it doesn’t matter where we live in the world we are always going to experience the bad times as well as the good times. Most people will only tell you the positive aspects of living in another country.

We’ve all seen the TV programmes about how people have lost their dream home, business, lifestyle and money and many of you have probably thought how on earth do so many people still fall victim to it or is it just made for TV. Unfortunately it’s not just made for TV, we have seen it happen to people we personally know in Tenerife. Even those who thought that they did everything by the book can still get caught up in bureaucracy. On the plus side most issues can be resolved amicably, but occasionally the ‘powers that be’ won’t budge an inch, and that can make life very difficult.

Having lived in Tenerife for 5 years, we have seen many people come and go for one reason or another. The most heartbreaking of all are the ones whose dreams are shattered and life savings gone.

On a positive note though, we also have many friends and acquaintances that are very happy with their lives in Tenerife and wouldn’t change it for the world despite the difficulties they may have faced. The experience of living in a foreign country was an opportunity that we will always be grateful for.

It isn’t my intention to discourage people from moving to Tenerife, if you have a dream and the opportunity presents itself, you should follow it through if you can. My intention is to make people more aware of what to expect, what not to expect and how to avoid nasty surprises. If this web site or our book stops just one persons dream from turning into a nightmare, then it was well worth the effort.

It’s worth remembering, that when you move to another country, you have to do things their way even if you don’t agree with it. They didn’t ask you to move there and you don’t have to stay, it’s your choice. Continued.
